About country
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country situated in West Africa, bordering Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. Historically, the area was settled by the Mossi people between the 11th and 13th centuries, establishing powerful kingdoms. Colonized by France in 1896 as part of French West Africa, it gained independence in 1960 as the Republic of Upper Volta. The country was renamed Burkina Faso in 1984 by President Thomas Sankara, meaning 'Land of Incorruptible People'. Despite its rich cultural heritage, Burkina Faso faces challenges related to political instability, droughts, and economic development.
