Turkmenistan is a landlocked country situated in Central Asia, sharing borders with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and the Caspian Sea. Historically, it served as a crucial crossroads for empires and cultures, notably along the Silk Road, with Merv being a prominent oasis city. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, it later became a republic within the Soviet Union in 1925. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Turkmenistan gained its independence. The country's economy is heavily reliant on its substantial natural gas reserves, though diversification efforts are underway.
